Got one weekend? Here’s how to fit the best of Christmas in Toronto into Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, with tips for avoiding the crowds and the ticketed times.

Friday evening: the Distillery Winter Village

Arrive at the Distillery Winter Village right after work. Evenings from 4 p.m. on Fridays are ticketed in 2026 (from $16 plus fees, kids 9 and under free), so book an early time slot and be there as the lights come on. Eat dinner in the district. Tickets

Tip: if you can arrive before 4 p.m. on Friday, you can usually enter without a ticket.

Saturday: markets, skating and a show

  • Morning: breakfast and browsing at St. Lawrence Market, plus the free Winter Market outside (Thursday to Sunday, November 19 to December 22). St. Lawrence Market at Christmas
  • Midday: shop the Eaton Centre and Queen Street West. Christmas shopping in Toronto
  • Afternoon: skate at Nathan Phillips Square. Skating guide
  • Evening: a holiday show (The Nutcracker, Messiah or Elf in Concert) or a Christmas pop-up bar. Christmas shows in Toronto

Sunday: lights and a slow morning

  • Morning: brunch, then the ROM or a walk around Yorkville. Christmas brunch in Toronto
  • Afternoon: the free Santa photos at the St. Lawrence Winter Market (weekends, noon to 3 p.m.) if you have kids, or afternoon tea.
  • Before you leave: one last loop of the Cavalcade of Lights at dusk.

Weekend options for different travellers

With kids: swap the evening Distillery visit for a daytime trip, add the Toronto Zoo’s holiday lights or a breakfast with Santa, and pick a hotel with a pool. Christmas in Toronto with kids

As a couple: add a holiday afternoon tea, a candlelight concert and a romantic dinner. Romantic Christmas in Toronto

On a budget: visit the Distillery on a free weekday if you can, skate with your own skates and see free lights and window displays. Toronto Christmas on a budget

Foodies: St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery’s food stalls, festive bakeries and a holiday tasting menu. Christmas dining in Toronto

Where to stay for the weekend

Stay downtown near Union Station, the St. Lawrence area or Yonge and Dundas so you can walk between the Distillery, Nathan Phillips Square and the Eaton Centre. See where to stay in Toronto at Christmas and best hotels for Christmas.

Getting there

  • By train: VIA Rail and GO Transit arrive at Union Station, right in the middle of downtown.
  • By plane: take the UP Express from Pearson to Union in about 25 minutes. Pearson at Christmas
  • By car: park at your hotel and use transit and your feet all weekend.

Book ahead

Reserve Distillery tickets for busy evenings, show tickets, restaurant tables and your hotel well in advance, especially for parade weekend and the weekends of mid-December.

Toronto Christmas weekend: FAQ

What’s the best weekend for a Christmas trip to Toronto? The first two weekends of December have the most going on; late November is quieter.

Can you see Toronto’s Christmas highlights in a weekend? Yes. Two days covers the Distillery, Nathan Phillips Square, a market and a show.

Which weekend is best?

  • November 21 to 22: parade weekend. Add the Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, plus parades in Mississauga and Brampton on Saturday night.
  • November 27 to 29: One of a Kind opens, the Cavalcade usually opens around now and the CPKC Holiday Train stops on Sunday night.
  • Early December: The Nutcracker starts December 5; good atmosphere, fewer crowds than mid-December.
  • December 12 to 13 and 19 to 20: the busiest weekends. Book everything ahead.
