Christmas markets

Lights
The Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls is Canada’s largest free light festival, with illuminated displays along the Niagara Parkway and nightly lighting of the falls. Pair it with the Niagara Falls Christmas guide.
Small-town charm
Elora, Stratford and Niagara-on-the-Lake are three of Ontario’s prettiest towns at Christmas, with historic main streets, independent shops and cozy inns. Elora’s evening Santa Claus Parade is a highlight.
Snow and skiing
Blue Mountain Village is the go-to for a ski weekend with a festive twist. See also skiing near Toronto.
Big-city weekends
Ottawa and Montreal both make excellent Christmas weekends by VIA Rail from Union Station, so you don’t have to drive in winter weather.
Our favourite day trip itineraries
Kitchener’s Christkindl Market (one day). Take the GO Train or drive to Kitchener in the morning, spend a few hours at the market at City Hall for German food, crafts and live music, then stop in nearby St. Jacobs or Waterloo before heading home.
Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake (one or two days). Spend the afternoon in Niagara-on-the-Lake’s historic Queen Street shops and a winery or two, then drive along the Niagara Parkway at dusk to Niagara Falls for the Winter Festival of Lights and the illuminated falls. Stay overnight to make it relaxed.
Elora and Fergus (one day). Walk Elora’s stone streets and the Grand River gorge in the afternoon, have an early dinner, and if your timing lines up, stay for the evening Santa Claus Parade.
Blue Mountain (weekend). Ski or tube by day, enjoy the village’s holiday lights and events at night, and stop in Collingwood for shopping on the way home.
Ottawa (long weekend). Take VIA Rail from Union Station, browse the Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne, see Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market, and skate if the weather allows.
