Toronto rings in the new year with a free waterfront celebration, fireworks over Lake Ontario, parties across the city and free transit home. Here’s how to plan New Year’s Eve 2026 in Toronto, based on how the city celebrated last year and what’s confirmed so far.
The City’s free New Year’s Eve celebration
In 2025 the City of Toronto moved its free New Year’s Eve party from Nathan Phillips Square to the waterfront, with the main stage at Harbourfront Centre and more celebration spots along Queens Quay, including Sherbourne Common and the Toronto Music Garden. The night ran from 10 p.m., with live music and a host line-up, a 10-minute fireworks show at midnight over the lake and a DJ set until 1 a.m. Harbourfront’s rink hosted a DJ skate night.
There were no fireworks at City Hall or Nathan Phillips Square in 2025. The City usually announces its programme, performers and location in December, and we’ll update this page when the 2026 details are out. See New Year’s Eve fireworks in Toronto.
Free transit on New Year’s Eve
On New Year’s Eve 2025, the TTC, GO Transit and UP Express were free from 7 p.m. on December 31 until 8 a.m. on January 1. The subway ran later than usual, with most last trains leaving around 2:30 a.m., and Blue Night buses took over until regular service started. Transit has been free on New Year’s Eve for several years, with sponsors and the City usually confirming it in December. TTC on New Year’s Eve

Tips
- Dress for the lake. It’s much colder and windier on the waterfront than downtown.
- Arrive by transit. Expect road closures around Queens Quay, Bay Street and York Street through the evening.
- Plan your route home before midnight; stations near the waterfront get very busy.
- Book dinners and parties early.
Best places to watch the midnight fireworks
If the 2026 celebration follows last year’s waterfront format, the fireworks are launched over the lake, so anywhere with a clear view south across the harbour works.
- Harbourfront Centre and the boardwalk along Queens Quay: closest to the main stage and the busiest. Arrive by 10:30 p.m. for a good spot.
- Sherbourne Common and Sugar Beach: a little east of the main crowds, with open views across the water.
- The Toronto Music Garden and HTO Park: west of the main stage, a little calmer.
- Higher up: some restaurants, hotel bars and condo party rooms along the waterfront have harbour views. Book well ahead. See New Year’s Eve dinner.

Getting there and getting home
- Take the subway to Union station, then walk south about 10 minutes, or use the Queens Quay streetcars (the 509 and 510), which run along the waterfront.
- Expect road closures along Queens Quay and nearby streets during the evening. Driving and parking near the waterfront is not recommended.
- Leaving after midnight: the crowds all head north at once. Walking a few blocks to King or St. Andrew station can be quicker than queueing at Union.
- Ride-share and taxis surge after midnight; transit is cheaper and usually faster.

Safety and comfort tips
- Dress in layers, with a hat, gloves and warm, waterproof boots. Late-night wind off the lake can make it feel 10 degrees colder.
- Bring a charged phone and agree on a meeting spot in case your group gets separated.
- Travel light. Large bags may be checked or restricted at City events.
- Plan for little ones: the waterfront is crowded at midnight. Families often prefer an early celebration. See family-friendly New Year’s Eve.
