Skip the mall and do your Christmas shopping on Toronto’s best streets, where independent shops, cafés and festive decorations make gift-hunting a pleasure. Here are the streets worth a dedicated afternoon.

Bloor-Yorkville

Queen Street West

From Spadina to Trinity Bellwoods Park and on to West Queen West, Queen Street mixes Canadian fashion labels, design stores, bookshops and vintage. Best for: clothing, home goods, books.

Ossington Avenue

A short strip of stylish independent boutiques, bars and restaurants just north of Queen. Best for: curated fashion and gifts, plus dinner after.

Kensington Market

Vintage clothing, spices, cheese, coffee and quirky independent shops in one of Toronto’s most characterful neighbourhoods. It also hosts the Winter Solstice Festival. Best for: unusual gifts and foodies. Kensington Market Winter Solstice

Leslieville (Queen Street East)

The Junction (Dundas Street West)

Roncesvalles Avenue

A walkable west-end strip with bookstores, toy shops, delis and bakeries. Best for: books, toys and food gifts.

Plan a shopping-street day

East-end route: start in Leslieville on Queen Street East for boutiques and brunch, take the 501 Queen streetcar west to the Distillery District for the Winter Village and artisan shops, then finish in the St. Lawrence area.

West-end route: begin on Queen Street West for fashion and design, walk to Ossington Avenue for independent shops and a late lunch, then hop on the 505 Dundas streetcar to the Junction for makers and vintage.

Uptown route: browse Bloor-Yorkville’s luxury shops and galleries, have afternoon tea, then see the lights and window displays as the sun sets.

What each street is best for

Street Best for
Bloor-Yorkville Luxury fashion, beauty and jewellery
Queen Street West Fashion, sneakers and design
Ossington Avenue Independent boutiques and restaurants
Kensington Market Vintage, spices and quirky gifts

Why shop on the street?

Shopping streets offer things malls can’t: independent shops with one-of-a-kind gifts, owners who know their products, cafés for breaks and the festive buzz of decorated storefronts. Many BIAs hold holiday events, late-night shopping and Santa visits in December. Every dollar spent in an independent shop helps keep Toronto’s neighbourhoods lively.

Tips for street shopping in winter

  • Wear comfortable, waterproof boots.
  • Bring a backpack or tote to keep your hands free.
  • Plan warm-up stops at cafés along the way.
  • Check opening hours; some independent shops open late morning and close early on Sundays.
  • Use transit: streetcars connect most of these streets.
