On the longest night of the year, Kensington Market lights up with one of Toronto’s most magical winter traditions: a lantern parade through the market’s narrow streets with giant papier-mâché puppets, drummers and fire performers, ending with a bonfire-style fire finale in Alexandra Park. The 2025 celebration was the 36th annual.
Winter Solstice 2026
The festival is held on the solstice, which falls on Monday, December 21, 2026. Watch the organizers for the 2026 schedule; in 2025 it ran like this:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. | Lantern sales at Oxford Street and Augusta Avenue |
| 6 p.m. | Parade assembly |
| 6:30 p.m. | “First Light” performance |
| 7 p.m. | The parade sets off through the market |
| After the parade | Fire finale in Alexandra Park |
Lanterns
You can buy a handmade paper lantern on a carrying stick (about $30 in 2025) or make your own and bring it. Carrying a lantern in the parade is the best way to experience it.
What to expect
- Opening ceremonies, including Indigenous ceremony and song, and fire-breathing
- Giant puppets and bands leading the parade
- The fire finale: in Alexandra Park, the parade circles a large sculpture that is then set alight while fire performers put on a show
About Kensington Market
Kensington Market is one of Toronto’s most distinctive neighbourhoods: a maze of narrow streets and Victorian houses turned into vintage shops, cafés, bakeries, cheese shops, fish markets and global food stalls. It has been a landing place for successive waves of immigrants for more than a century, and it’s a designated National Historic Site of Canada. Its bohemian spirit makes it the perfect home for an alternative winter festival.
The meaning of the solstice
The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Cultures around the world have long celebrated it as the return of the light, with fire, lanterns and gatherings. In Toronto, the sun sets around 4:45 p.m. on the solstice, with about nine hours of daylight. See winter solstice in Toronto.
Make your own lantern
Many participants carry homemade lanterns in the parade. Simple versions include:
- A paper lantern around a battery-operated tea light.
- A decorated mason jar with an LED candle and a wire handle.
- A paper bag lantern with cut-out stars.
Use LED lights rather than real flames for safety in the crowd.
Kensington Market in December
Even outside the festival, Kensington is a great place for holiday shopping: vintage clothing, unique gifts, spices, cheeses, baked goods and coffee. Combine a visit with Chinatown next door for dim sum or a festive meal.
