Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of Ontario’s prettiest Christmas towns: a Victorian main street with garlands and bows, horse-drawn carriages, cozy inns and wineries pouring icewine. It’s about 90 minutes from Toronto.

Christmas traditions in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Based on the 2025 season (watch for 2026 dates):

  • Victorian Christmas village: the historic Old Town decorates from early November to late December.
  • Candlelight Stroll: a candlelit walk through the village with holiday performances, in early December (December 5 in 2025).
  • Santa Claus Parade: a mid-December parade with festive floats (December 13 in 2025).
  • Horse-drawn carriage tours through the Old Town and along the waterfront.
  • Holiday dining: Christmas teas, Breakfast with Santa and festive feasts at the town’s historic hotels.
  • Just Christmas: a year-round Christmas shop in the Old Town.

Wineries

Niagara’s wineries host festive tastings and holiday events, and it’s the home of Canadian icewine, a great Christmas gift.

The Shaw Festival

The Shaw Festival traditionally stages holiday productions in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In 2026 its A Christmas Carol also plays in Toronto at Harbourfront Centre (November 12 to December 23). A Christmas Carol in Toronto

A Niagara-on-the-Lake Christmas weekend

Saturday. Arrive late morning and stroll Queen Street’s decorated shops, from fudge and preserves to fashion and home decor. Have lunch in a historic inn. In the afternoon, take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Old Town, then visit a winery for a tasting. Enjoy a cozy dinner and stay overnight at an inn or B&B.

Sunday. After breakfast, visit Fort George National Historic Site (check winter hours) or walk along the Niagara River. Drive the scenic Niagara Parkway south to Niagara Falls for the Winter Festival of Lights in the evening before heading home. See Niagara Falls at Christmas and the Winter Festival of Lights.

Icewine: Niagara’s holiday treat

Niagara is one of the world’s best-known icewine regions. Icewine is made from grapes left on the vine until they freeze naturally, usually in December or January, producing a small amount of very sweet, concentrated juice. A bottle makes a perfect Canadian holiday gift, and many wineries offer tastings and winter experiences. Always plan a designated driver or book a tour if you’re visiting several wineries.

Where to stay

Niagara-on-the-Lake has charming historic inns, boutique hotels and B&Bs, many decorated for the season. Book early for December weekends, especially around the Candlelight Stroll and the Santa Claus Parade.

Shopping

Queen Street’s shops are ideal for gifts: local wines and preserves, chocolates, Christmas ornaments, clothing and art. The area’s farm markets also sell seasonal treats.
