Every winter, Niagara Falls lights up for the Winter Festival of Lights, billed as Canada’s largest free outdoor light festival. Millions of lights and large illuminated displays line the Niagara Parkway and Queen Victoria Park, with the falls themselves lit in colour every night. It’s about 90 minutes from Toronto, making it an easy Christmas day trip.

At a glance

Detail Info
When Usually mid-November to early January (2026–27 dates to be confirmed)
Where Niagara Parkway, Queen Victoria Park and the tourist district, Niagara Falls, Ontario
Cost Free (parking extra)
Distance About 130 km from downtown Toronto

What to see

  • Illuminated displays along the Niagara Parkway and in Queen Victoria Park, which you can walk or drive past
  • The falls lit up at night in changing colours
  • Fireworks over the falls on select nights in the winter season; check the schedule
  • Clifton Hill’s attractions and lights a short walk away

A day trip plan

  1. Afternoon: drive or take GO Transit to Niagara Falls and see the falls in daylight.
  2. Dusk: walk along the Parkway as the lights come on.
  3. Evening: dinner overlooking the falls, then fireworks if it’s a fireworks night.
  4. Late evening: head back to Toronto.

Walking vs. driving

Walking lets you see the falls up close, take photos and enjoy the displays in Queen Victoria Park at your own pace. Dress warmly, as the mist from the falls can make it feel colder and paths can be icy.

Driving along the Niagara Parkway is a great option for families with young children, older relatives or anyone who wants to stay warm. Go slowly, follow posted signs and expect heavier traffic on weekends.

Many visitors do both: drive the Parkway displays, then park and walk to see the illuminated falls.

Best time to visit

  • Weeknights are quieter than Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Early in the season (mid-to-late November) is less busy, while the weeks around Christmas are the busiest.
  • Arrive at dusk to see the falls change colour as night falls.
  • Check the fireworks schedule: Niagara Parks has held fireworks over the falls on select nights in winter.

Where to eat and warm up

Restaurants overlooking the falls, the Clifton Hill area and nearby hotels offer places to eat and warm up. For a quieter dinner, drive 20 minutes to Niagara-on-the-Lake. See Christmas in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Parking

Niagara Parks operates paid parking lots near the falls, and there are municipal and private lots in the tourist district. Parking can fill up on weekends and holidays, so arrive early.

Winter Festival of Lights: FAQ

Is the Winter Festival of Lights free? Yes, the main displays are free to visit.

How long do you need? About two to three hours to see the falls and the main displays.

Can you see it from the U.S. side? The illuminated falls are visible from both sides, but most festival displays are on the Canadian side.

Getting there

  • By car: about 90 minutes via the QEW.
  • By GO Transit: GO trains and buses run between Toronto and Niagara Falls; check weekend and holiday schedules.
