Toronto at Christmas is made for photos. Here are the most photogenic holiday spots in the city, with tips on when to go for the best light and the smallest crowds.

1. The Distillery Winter Village tree

One of the most photographed Christmas trees in Canada, with a new look for 2026, set among Victorian brick buildings and lit canopies. Tip: shoot at dusk on a weekday for blue-hour skies and fewer people. Distillery Winter Village

2. Nathan Phillips Square

The Toronto sign, the official city tree, the lit arches over the rink and City Hall’s curved towers, all in one frame. Tip: shoot from the raised walkway around the square for a wider view. Cavalcade of Lights

3. The Eaton Centre’s 114-foot tree

Indoors and warm, under the glass galleria. Tip: go to the upper levels and time it for the hourly snow show. Eaton Centre at Christmas

4. Casa Loma

Castle towers, lit gardens and tunnels on the evening Holiday Lights Tour. Tip: book an early weeknight slot. Casa Loma at Christmas

5. Bloor-Yorkville

Glowing storefronts and luxury window displays. Tip: Hazelton Avenue and Yorkville Village’s side streets are quieter than Bloor Street. Christmas in Yorkville

6. Toronto Zoo’s Glow in the Wild

More than 2,000 lantern sculptures along a 1.5 km trail. Tip: use night mode and keep your phone steady against a railing. Glow in the Wild

7. Harbourfront and the lake

The Natrel Rink, the skyline and the lake, plus the Miracle Christmas bar next door. Tip: go at sunset for the skyline glow. Natrel Rink

8. St. Lawrence Market

The historic market halls and the Winter Market’s lights on Market Street. St. Lawrence Market at Christmas

9. Residential light displays

Over-the-top houses in Scarborough and Wychwood. Please be respectful of residents. Neighbourhood lights

More photo spots worth a stop

  • The TORONTO sign at Nathan Phillips Square: colourful at night, with the rink and tree beside it.
  • The Toronto Islands: the best skyline views in the city, especially at blue hour. Holiday harbour cruises and the island ferry
  • Riverdale Park East: a classic view of the skyline across the Don Valley, magical after a snowfall.
  • Union Station’s Great Hall: grand architecture and seasonal decorations.
  • The Bentway: dramatic concrete columns framing the skate trail. The Bentway
  • Kensington Market’s solstice festival: lanterns and fire on December 21. Kensington Market
  • Unionville’s Main Street: a storybook historic street just north of the city. Unionville at Christmas

Holiday photo shoot tips for families

  • Book the golden hour, about an hour before sunset (around 3:45 p.m. in December), for soft, warm light.
  • Coordinate outfits in a simple colour palette, avoiding busy logos.
  • Bring props: a blanket, a thermos and mugs, Santa hats or a sled.
  • Keep kids warm and fed; short sessions work best.
  • Visit popular spots on weekdays to avoid crowds in your shots.
  • Respect private property and other visitors, and avoid blocking pathways.

Phone photography tips for lights

  • Use night mode and hold your phone steady, or rest it on a railing.
  • Tap to focus on the lights, then lower the exposure slightly so they don’t blow out.
  • Shoot at blue hour, about 20 to 30 minutes after sunset, when the sky is deep blue.
  • Turn off flash for light displays.
  • Clean your lens; cold air and fingerprints cause haze.

Christmas photo spots: FAQ

What’s the most Instagrammable Christmas spot in Toronto? The Distillery Winter Village’s tree and lit lanes, closely followed by Nathan Phillips Square.

When is the best time to take Christmas photos in Toronto? At blue hour, just after sunset, when lights are on but the sky still has colour.

Photography tips

  • Blue hour (about 20 minutes after sunset, around 5 p.m. in December) gives the best balance of sky and lights.
  • Use night mode and brace your phone for sharper shots.
  • Go on weekdays to avoid crowds in your frame.
  • Keep batteries warm; cold drains them quickly.
