Before the Christmas markets open, Toronto’s holiday season gets an early, very Canadian start at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. For ten days in November, Exhibition Place fills with prize cattle, giant vegetables, butter sculptures, dog shows, a food hall full of Ontario producers and the Royal Horse Show, one of the top international show-jumping events in the country. It’s billed as the largest indoor agricultural and equestrian event in the world, and around 300,000 people visit each year.

What to see
Farm animals and competitions
The heart of the Royal is agriculture. Barns full of dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits compete for ribbons, and you can walk right up to the pens. Competitions cover everything from livestock to preserves, field crops and giant vegetables.
The Royal Horse Show
The Royal Horse Show brings international show-jumping riders to the Coca-Cola Coliseum, alongside heavy horse classes and six-horse hitch driving competitions. Evening sessions are the most popular and need their own tickets, so book ahead if this is the reason you’re going.
Food
The fair is a showcase for Ontario food: cheese, honey, maple syrup, baked goods and plenty of things to eat on the spot. It’s a good place to pick up edible Christmas gifts from local producers.
Family favourites
Kids love the animal barns, hands-on farm displays, dog shows and demonstrations. Plan for more time than you think; the fair spreads across several halls.
Why it’s part of Christmas in Toronto
The Royal sits right at the start of the holiday season. It overlaps with the opening of the Distillery Winter Village on November 12, and it ends a week before the Santa Claus Parade on November 22. Many vendors sell holiday foods and gifts, making it an early stop for Christmas shopping. See the full Toronto Christmas events calendar for November.
