What happens at a tree lighting?
Most GTA tree lightings follow a familiar, family-friendly pattern:
- Pre-show entertainment: local choirs, school bands, dancers and holiday music, often starting an hour or two before the lighting.
- Free treats: hot chocolate, cookies or candy canes, while supplies last.
- Santa’s arrival, sometimes by fire truck.
- The countdown and the big switch-on.
- Afterwards: fireworks at some events, plus markets, skating or photos with Santa.
Tips for families
- Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to get close to the tree and the stage.
- Bring a flashlight or glow sticks for kids; it’s dark by 5 p.m. in late November.
- Check accessibility and parking on each city’s events page, and use GO Transit where you can.
- Dress warmly; you’ll be standing outdoors for an hour or more.
- Bring a non-perishable food donation: many tree lightings collect for local food banks.
Pair a lighting with another event
Several towns hold their tree lighting right after their Santa Claus parade or alongside a market, making it easy to fill a day. Mississauga’s lighting at Celebration Square follows its parade; Streetsville combines its lighting with Christmas in the Village.
