Spending Christmas Alone in Toronto

Whether by choice, distance or circumstance, many people spend Christmas on their own in Toronto. Here are ways to make it a good day.

Get out and about

  • Go skating at Nathan Phillips Square; rinks are often open on holidays (check hours).
  • Take a winter walk in a ravine or on the waterfront. See winter hikes.
  • Catch a movie: cinemas are among the few places open on Christmas Day. See what’s open on Christmas Day.
  • Treat yourself to a meal at one of the restaurants open on Christmas Day.

Connect with others

  • Volunteer at a community meal or toy drive. See volunteering at Christmas. Many spots fill up early, so sign up in November.
  • Attend a service or concert: church services and carol events welcome everyone.
  • Join a community dinner: some community centres, faith groups and organisations host open holiday meals.
  • Call or video-chat with friends and family.

Make it yours

Cook your favourite meal, start a movie marathon or plan a Boxing Day outing to look forward to.

A cozy solo Christmas Day plan

Time Plan
Morning Sleep in, a favourite breakfast and a call with family or friends
Late morning A walk in a ravine, along the waterfront or through quiet downtown streets
Noon Dim sum in Chinatown or a festive brunch
Afternoon A skate or a movie at the cinema
Evening Your favourite meal and a Christmas film marathon

Treat yourself

Christmas alone can be a chance to do exactly what you want:

  • Book a hotel night downtown and enjoy room service and the lights. Best hotels for Christmas
  • Have afternoon tea in the days before Christmas. Holiday afternoon tea
  • Buy yourself a gift from a local maker.
  • See a show like The Nutcracker or a candlelight concert in the days around Christmas.
  • Cook something special you’d never make for a crowd.

Connect with community

Toronto has many ways to spend part of the holiday with others: community dinners at faith centres and community centres, volunteer shifts at food banks or meal programmes, church services and carol sings, and holiday events at libraries in the days before Christmas. Sign up early to volunteer, as spots fill quickly.

Newcomers and international students

If you’re new to Toronto or studying far from home, you’re not alone. Many universities, colleges, cultural associations and faith communities host holiday gatherings for students and newcomers. Check your school’s student services or community groups in early December. The days between Christmas and New Year’s are also a great time to explore the city with friends.
