Christmas Church Services in Toronto 2026

Toronto’s historic churches and cathedrals hold beautiful services over Christmas, and visitors are welcome. In 2026, Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24 and Christmas Day is Friday, December 25.

Downtown churches to know

  • St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica (Catholic), on Bond Street, is the seat of the Archdiocese of Toronto and holds Christmas Masses, including a late-night Mass on Christmas Eve.
  • Cathedral Church of St. James (Anglican), at King and Church, is one of the city’s oldest congregations, with choral services.
  • Metropolitan United Church, at Queen and Church, is known for its music.
  • St. Paul’s Bloor Street (Anglican), a large church near Yonge and Bloor.
  • Church of the Holy Trinity, beside the Eaton Centre, is famous for The Christmas Story, a long-running nativity pageant held in December.

Service times are posted by each church in late November or December; popular services fill up, so arrive early.

Types of services

  • Lessons and carols: readings and carols, often in early-to-mid December. See Christmas carols in Toronto.
  • Family services: usually late afternoon on Christmas Eve, often with a pageant.
  • Midnight Mass or late-evening services on Christmas Eve.
  • Christmas Day morning services.

Other traditions

Toronto’s diversity means Christmas is celebrated in many traditions. See Simbang Gabi, Orthodox Christmas and Caribbean Christmas.

Services for families with children

Many churches hold an earlier Christmas Eve service designed for families, usually in the late afternoon. These are often shorter, with a children’s pageant or nativity play, carols everyone knows and a relaxed atmosphere where noise is expected. They’re the best choice if you have young children or older relatives who prefer not to be out late.

What to expect at a midnight Mass or late service

  • A full church: arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for a seat.
  • Candlelight: many services end with the congregation singing “Silent Night” by candlelight.
  • Choirs and organ music, often with special anthems for the season.
  • A length of about 60 to 90 minutes.

Visitors are welcome to attend without taking part in Communion; follow the lead of the people around you.

Christmas services in other languages

Toronto’s churches hold Christmas services in many languages, including Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Tagalog, Korean, Spanish and Chinese. Check with parishes in neighbourhoods like Little Italy, Little Portugal, Koreatown and Chinatown, or with your community’s church, for 2026 schedules.

Accessibility

Many large churches have accessible entrances, and some offer hearing-assistance systems or livestreams of their services. Contact the church ahead of time if you need help, and ask about reserved seating for people with mobility needs.

Christmas church services: FAQ

Can anyone attend a Christmas Eve service? Yes. Churches welcome visitors of all backgrounds, especially at Christmas.

Do I need a ticket? Most services don’t, but a few very popular services may ask you to reserve a free ticket. Check each church’s website.

Are services livestreamed? Many churches now livestream their Christmas services online.

Tips

  • Transit: check the TTC holiday schedule for late-night service on Christmas Eve.
  • Dress warmly and arrive early for the most popular services.
