Distillery Winter Village Tips: Best Times to Go and How to Beat the Crowds

The Distillery Winter Village can be magical or miserable depending on when you go. On a Tuesday afternoon you’ll stroll the cobblestones with a hot chocolate and room to breathe. On a Saturday night in December you’ll shuffle shoulder to shoulder. These tips will help you get the good version.

1. Go Monday to Wednesday before December 14

This is the single best tip. Entry is free all day Monday to Wednesday until December 13, and these are the quietest days of the season. If you can only choose one window, pick a weekday in the second half of November or the first week of December.

2. Arrive around 3 p.m. and stay for dusk

The lights are the main event, but the sun sets just before 5 p.m. in late November and December. Arrive mid-afternoon to browse the vendor cabins while it’s calm, then stay as the tree and the light canopies switch on. You get daytime shopping and the night-time look in one visit.

3. If you must go on a weekend, book early

Weekend evenings after 4 p.m. are ticketed and busy. Book the earliest time slot available, and buy as soon as you know your date. See our ticket guide for the full ticketed calendar.

4. Avoid December 14 to 23 if you can

The run-up to Christmas is the busiest stretch of the year, and every evening is ticketed from December 14 to 31. Daytime visits are still manageable, but evenings are crowded.

5. Eat before or after peak hours

Food lines are longest between 5 and 8 p.m. Eat a late lunch at the market at 3 p.m., or book a table at one of the district’s restaurants. Our food and drink guide covers what’s worth the wait.

6. Dress for standing still outside

Almost everything is outdoors. You’ll be walking slowly and standing in lines, which feels colder than a brisk walk. Wear insulated boots with grip (cobblestones get slick), a hat, gloves and layers. Check Toronto weather in December and our winter packing list.

7. Take transit, not your car

Nearby lots fill quickly and traffic around Parliament and Cherry streets backs up on weekends. Take the 504 King streetcar to the Distillery Loop on Cherry Street. Details in parking and transit for Christmas events.

8. Bring a carrier, not a small stroller

Cobblestones and crowds are hard on strollers with small wheels. A carrier or an all-terrain stroller makes life easier. Children 9 and under get in free, even at ticketed times.

9. Visit Santa on a weekday

Lines at Santa’s Village, this year at Soulpepper Theatre, are shortest on weekday afternoons. For other options see where to see Santa in Toronto.

10. Get the tree photo early or late

The Christmas tree is one of the most photographed in Canada, which means there’s always a crowd in front of it. Go right when the lights come on at dusk on a weekday, or near closing time. See more spots in our Christmas photo spots guide.

11. Shop the permanent stores too

The district has more than 90 permanent shops, galleries and cafés, most of them Canadian-owned. They’re warmer than the cabins and often less crowded, and many sell goods made on-site.

12. Combine it with St. Lawrence Market

St. Lawrence Market is about a 20-minute walk west. Go there for lunch, then walk over to the Distillery for the afternoon and evening. See St. Lawrence Market at Christmas.

13. Remember it’s closed on Christmas Day

The village is closed on December 25. It reopens on December 26 and runs until January 3, 2027.

A sample visit

  • 2:30 p.m. Lunch at St. Lawrence Market
  • 3:00 p.m. Walk east to the Distillery District
  • 3:15 p.m. Browse vendor cabins and the permanent shops
  • 4:45 p.m. Find a spot near the tree as the lights come on
  • 5:15 p.m. Hot chocolate or mulled wine, then a slow loop of the lit lanes
  • 6:30 p.m. Early dinner in the district before the evening rush peaks
